In this workshop, you’ll learn everything you need to know to install zippers into sweaters by installing a 6-inch zipper to join two swatches—with NO SEWING! We’ll use a Knit Picker tool to pick up stitches along our zippers and join these zippers to our knitting.

Skills needed: Picking up stitches

Techniques covered: Picking up stitches on a zipper using a Knit Picker; joining zipper stitches to the edge of a project

Materials needed:

Fingering weight yarn in any color for picking up stitches along the zipper. I recommend a strong, plied, wool sock yarn in a light color.

Worsted weight yarn (the yarn used for the swatches or another color)

Ruler at least 6 inches long

Fine-point gel pen or marker

I’ll provide Knit Picker tools, zippers, ribbon, and thread!

Optional materials:

If you have a sweater in which you’d like to install a zipper, feel free to bring it and an appropriate zipper. Choose a separating zipper in the size closest to the length of your front edging; choose the size under the actual length. Even better, you can order a customized zipper from Zipperstop: http://www.zipperstop.com. Customizing the length is only $1 extra!

Homework:

Knit a Stockinette stitch swatch, approximately 6 inches by 6 inches, in worsted weight yarn. I recommend using a light color. Wet block it, pinning the edges flat to prevent rolling.

About Ann Weaver

When Ann Weaver is not traveling to teach or exploring thrift stores and estate sales, you will find her in West Baltimore, where she works as a freelance editor and writer and runs Plied Yarns. Knitting, mending, dyeing, sewing, and piecing—she uses all her skills to inspire her students in her laid-back, individualized workshops.

My teaching style is low-stakes, hands-on, and individualized.

About Plied Yarn Co

Plied is a yarn line that Karida Collins (Neighborhood Fiber Co.) and Ann Weaver (weaverknits) conceived when touring the Harrisville Designs mill in New Hampshire. North Ave is their first yarn: a 100% wool, two-ply, woolen spun, fingering weight yarn, spun at Harrisville and hand-dyed in Baltimore.

North Ave is a major east-west artery in Baltimore and the location of many cultural landmarks in the city. It is part of old Route 1, so before I95 was built, it was the way people traveled all along the east coast, from Florida to Maine. Additionally, it used to be the northern boundary of the city—everything north of that was the suburbs! For much of Baltimore's early history, North Ave was a thriving center of arts and business, but it fell into disrepair in the second half of the twentieth century. Today, the city has designated sections of North Ave as Arts and Entertainment districts, which is driving revitalization.

To celebrate the city of Baltimore—both its past and its current developments—Plied colors are named for Baltimore traditions, locations, and personalities.
